The Urine Protein-to-Creatinine Ratio (UPCR) is a non-invasive and accurate method for measuring the amount of protein excreted in urine. It serves as a simpler alternative to the 24-hour urine collection. In this test, the ratio of protein to creatinine is calculated in a random urine sample to assess proteinuria (abnormal protein excretion in urine). Creatinine, a waste product excreted at a relatively constant rate, is used to standardize the concentration of protein in urine, making the results independent of urine dilution or concentration. UPCR is particularly useful in the diagnosis and monitoring of kidney diseases such as diabetic nephropathy, glomerulonephritis, or hypertensive nephropathy. Normal values are typically less than 150 mg/g.
