The Serum Uric Acid test is used to measure the level of uric acid in the blood. Uric acid is an end product of purine metabolism (compounds found in certain foods and body cells), and it is usually excreted by the kidneys. This test is commonly used to diagnose or monitor conditions such as gout (a disease caused by the accumulation of uric acid crystals in the joints), kidney stones, or renal disorders.
Elevated uric acid levels (hyperuricemia) may indicate gout, kidney disease, or complications related to chemotherapy, while low levels may be associated with liver disorders, Fanconi syndrome, or the use of certain medications. The test is performed through a venous blood sample, and temporary fasting may sometimes be required.
Interpretation of results should consider risk factors, clinical symptoms, and other complementary tests. Uric acid levels are often managed through dietary changes (reducing intake of red meat and alcohol) or medications such as allopurinol.
